The FA Cup final that many argue should never have been played came just six weeks after the Hillsborough disaster at which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives prior to the semi-final against Nottingham Forest.
In Everton’s eleventh Wembley appearance in five years, for a long part of the match it looked like John Aldridge’s fourth-minute goal would be enough to separate the two teams. Liverpool dominated for long stretches, and it was not until injury time that substitute Stuart McCall scrambled an Everton equaliser. Ian Rush put Liverpool back in front early in extra time, only for McCall to unleash a stunning volley from the edge of the Liverpool area to make it 2-2. Rush, however, had the final say, scoring a winner in the 104th minute.
‘The game was very competitive,’ said Colin Harvey afterwards.‘What both teams wanted was a game played in the right spirit, and the crowd to watch it in the right spirit, which they did.’
