The 1984 FA Cup final marked the dawn of a new golden era for Everton, after years spent in Liverpool’s shadow.
Watford had the best of the early exchanges, but once Graeme Sharp’s turn and shot put Everton ahead on 37 minutes, there was only one team in it. On 52 minutes, Andy Gray’s controversial header – there were claims he fouled the Watford goalkeeper, Steve Sherwood – made it 2-0 and an unassailable lead.
‘It shows that when people talk about a crisis at a football club, they should think in terms of the whole season,’ said Howard Kendall after victory had been ensured. ‘Fortunately the chairman and the board had faith. I am delighted for everyone that we have taken a major trophy back to Merseyside that belongs to Everton for a change.’
He continued, ‘To win the FA Cup is fantastic, but in the long run it is the championship, achieved over 42 games, that has to be the main objective. The Cup was the icing, now we want the cake.’
