For years Evertonians had suffered false dawn after false dawn in their long wait for success. But Everton’s Milk Cup semi-final win was the latest sign that times were changing. The previous month there had been famous cup wins over Stoke City and Oxford United and Everton’s league campaign was gathering momentum. The tie with Villa was a poor, scrappy encounter decided by Kevin Sheedy’s bobbling cross shot and Kevin Richardson’s fierce drive. Villa won the second leg 1-0 a week later, but Everton had done enough to go through on aggregate. It was a clear sign that Everton were on the up, but not even the most optimistic fan could have foreseen the adventures that were to follow.
