Everton had the chance to retain the FA Cup when they faced Sheffield Wednesday – the previous year’s vanquished quarter- finalists – at Crystal Palace. But the build-up to the final was disrupted by a dispute between George Wilson – Everton’s brilliant inside forward – and the directors, who omitted him from the starting line-up, despite his scoring in the semi-final. The decision bewildered both fans and neutral onlookers, including the Football League’s founding father, William McGregor.

Wednesday took an early lead, but Jack Sharp ensured the half-time score stood at 1-1. But Everton were unable to seize control of a scrappy game and six minutes from the end, Simpson’s goal won the FA Cup for Wednesday.
